Method
Source: FR Y-9C, the consolidated financial statements every U.S. bank holding company above the filing threshold reports to the Federal Reserve each quarter, as published in bulk by the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago, 1986Q3 to 2021Q1. Amounts in dollars (the form files in thousands). One row per holding company and quarter; parent-only filers (FR Y-9LP) are excluded. The filing threshold moved: $150 million in assets until 2006, $500 million from 2006, $1 billion from 2015 and $3 billion from 2018Q3, so the number of filers falls from roughly 2,000 to a few hundred over the series and medians shift at each step; compare quarters within a threshold era, not across it. Percentiles are percentile_cont over all holdings of the group in the same quarter, computed in the database; income is year to date, annualised with 4/quarter. Capital ratios are the filed Schedule HC-R figures. Coverage ends with 2021Q1: the Chicago Fed series stopped there, and later quarters are available only through the FFIEC National Information Center, which does not permit automated retrieval. Every figure links to its filed record. Bank benchmarks (FFIEC Call Reports of the subsidiary banks) run to the current quarter with the same method.
